Industrial grade calcium propionate and food grade calcium propionate differ mainly in the following aspects:

Purity

Food Grade Calcium Propionate: Higher purity, usually above 99.0%, with very low impurity content to ensure the safety and effectiveness of its use in food.

Industrial Grade Calcium Propionate: The purity is relatively low, usually the content is around 95.0% - 98.0%, and the impurity content is relatively high, which may contain some heavy metal impurities or other organic impurities that are harmful to human body.

Impurity limit

Food Grade Calcium Propionate: The limit of impurities is very strict. The content of heavy metals (such as lead, arsenic, mercury, etc.) is strictly limited, generally the lead content does not exceed 2mg/kg, arsenic content does not exceed 3mg/kg. this is to protect the health of consumers and avoid the long-term intake of heavy metals that may be harmful to the human body.

Industrial Grade Calcium Propionate: The limits of heavy metals and other impurities are relatively loose. The permissible range of heavy metal content is usually higher than that of food grade, for example, lead content may be allowed to be around 10mg/kg. This is because industrial grade products are mainly used in the industrial field and are not as sensitive to impurities as food grade products.

Production process

Food Grade Calcium Propionate: The production process requires strict adherence to food safety related norms and standards. The selection of raw materials is more stringent, usually using high-purity propionic acid and high-quality calcium sources, and the production process requires very high hygienic conditions, with strict quality control and testing procedures to ensure that the product meets the quality requirements of food additives.

Industrial Grade Calcium Propionate: The production process is relatively simple, the purity requirements for raw materials are not as high as food grade, and the hygiene control standards in the production process are lower than food grade products. In industrial production, more attention is paid to the cost and yield of the product, and the degree of removal of impurities is not as fine as in food grade production.

Uses

Food Grade Calcium Propionate: It is mainly used in the food industry as a food preservative and freshness-keeping agent, and is added to various types of food such as bread, pastries, soy products, jams, etc. to inhibit the growth of microorganisms and prolong the shelf-life of the food, as well as to ensure the safety and quality of the food.

Industrial Grade Calcium Propionate: It is used in industrial fields, such as coatings, paints, printing ink, plastics and other industries, as an anti-mold agent, preservative or additive, mainly used to prevent the industrial products from being contaminated and damaged by microorganisms in the process of storage and use, and the safety requirements for the products are lower than those for food grade.
